Why the IB matters in Riyadh
The International Baccalaureate sits inside a wider Saudi educational landscape that has been transformed by the Vision 2030 reforms. Where the city's secondary sector was once dominated by the British curriculum and the Saudi national curriculum, the Diploma has emerged as the third credible pillar for the internationally mobile expat family. The programme works in Riyadh for the same reasons it works anywhere: it is portable across borders, it preserves university options across continents, and the breadth of the Diploma plays well with the language and cultural mixing inherent in the Riyadh expat experience.
The depth, however, is narrower than in Dubai or Doha. Riyadh has five authorised Diploma providers, compared with more than fifteen in Dubai and nine in Doha. That makes selection more important than in cities where the choice is wider. Most expat families targeting the IB in Riyadh end up choosing between three or four schools that are accessible from their preferred housing district, and the difference between them at sixth form is material. For the wider context see our best international schools in Riyadh piece and the Riyadh city guide.
How we judged the programmes
We looked at six factors. Programme breadth, capturing whether the school runs the full IB continuum (Primary Years, Middle Years, Diploma) or only the Diploma at sixth form. Cohort size at Diploma, which determines whether the Higher Level subject menu is rich or shallow. Published average Diploma score over the past three results cycles, where available. Faculty stability and IB authorisation history, which signals whether the programme is well rooted or still finding its feet. University destinations across the past three years, with weight on US selective universities, UK Russell Group, and the Saudi-Arabia recognised tier. Fees relative to the realistic all-in family cost.
The five schools below are the only ones currently authorised by the IB Organisation to deliver any IB programme in Riyadh. A few schools talk about an IB orientation in their marketing but are not authorised; we have excluded those. Authorisation matters because only authorised schools can register candidates for the May or November examination sessions and issue the final transcript that universities recognise.
The five IB Diploma schools
Multinational School Riyadh (MNS-R)
The most mature full-continuum IB school in Riyadh. PYP, MYP and DP all delivered to a stable, well established academic standard. Diploma averages around 33 to 35 points across the past three cycles, with strongest destinations into US universities and a growing pipeline into the Netherlands. Cohort of around 20 to 30 candidates per year. The school of choice for families wanting the full IB continuum from primary through to Diploma in a single school.
American International School Riyadh (AISR)
The most established American-curriculum school in the city, running the IB Diploma at sixth form alongside the US high school diploma. Diploma cohort of around 15 to 25 candidates per year. Published averages 32 to 34 points. Strong US selective university destinations and a steady flow into UK and European universities. The default choice for families on US compensation packages whose children will return to the US for university.
King Faisal School
A historically Saudi national school that has added the IB Diploma to its sixth form offer over the past decade. Diploma cohort around 15 to 20 candidates a year, with a Saudi-international mix that is unusual among Riyadh IB providers. Published averages 33 to 35 points with strong destinations into US and UK universities, including a notable Oxbridge stream. Excellent fit for Saudi-foreign mixed families and for international families wanting a school with deeper local roots.
Misk Schools
A flagship project under the Misk Foundation, the school runs the British curriculum through Year 11 and the IB Diploma at sixth form. Strong campus, generous staffing ratios and ambitious academic targets. Younger Diploma cohort (first graduates in recent years) with results stabilising around 32 to 34 points. Strong English-medium teaching and a deep co-curricular programme. Suits families wanting a high-investment, well resourced school environment with clear Vision 2030 alignment.
Kingdom Schools International
The newest entrant to the Riyadh IB cluster, running IGCSE at Key Stage 4 followed by the IB Diploma. Cohort still scaling, with the most recent graduating year groups around 10 to 15 candidates. Published averages early to settle but the most recent results have come in around 32 points. Strong campus and clear ambition. A reasonable fit for families committed to the school's longer term trajectory, particularly those whose children entered at primary.

Fees at IB Diploma level
Riyadh IB Diploma tuition in 2026 ranges from SAR 60,000 a year at Multinational School to SAR 110,000 at the top of American International School. The mid market (King Faisal, Misk, Kingdom) clusters in the SAR 80,000 to SAR 100,000 range. Converted at current exchange rates, the top of the Riyadh market sits at around USD 29,000 a year, which is comparable to the established Dubai market and slightly below the top of Doha. For most expat families on a senior corporate package, the employer education allowance covers the headline tuition fully; for self-funded families on Premium Residency, the calculation is different.
The all in family number is materially above headline tuition. Capital levies at the international tier run SAR 30,000 to SAR 60,000 at registration, sometimes paid in instalments. Annual registration fees and the application fee together run SAR 3,000 to SAR 8,000. Diploma examination fees run SAR 7,500 to SAR 14,000, charged separately in Year 12 and Year 13. School bus runs SAR 6,000 to SAR 12,000 per child per year. Uniform, where applicable, SAR 1,500 to SAR 3,500 in the first year. The loading on top of headline tuition runs at around 15 to 20 percent of headline. Sixth form outcomes and university destinations
Published Diploma averages cluster more tightly than the fee gap suggests, with the top of the Riyadh market in the 33 to 35 point band over the past three cycles. American International School and Multinational School Riyadh are the most consistent top performers, with King Faisal not far behind. The global Diploma average for 2024 sat at 30.32 points, so the Riyadh top three schools sit roughly three to five points above the world benchmark.
University destinations show the clearer differentiation. American International School has the deepest US pipeline, with roughly 40 percent of leavers each year going to US universities and a steady stream into the top US tier. Multinational School splits its destinations more evenly between the US, UK, Canada and the Netherlands. King Faisal School is the strongest into UK Russell Group destinations and produces an unusual rate of Oxbridge offers given the cohort size, partly explained by the strong Saudi-international mix and the high parental investment in university preparation. Misk and Kingdom are still building track records; the early signs are credible but the data is thin.
Choosing the right IB school
The right IB school in Riyadh depends on three variables: where the next move will be, how much subject specialisation matters at sixth form, and the housing district the family commits to. If the next move is likely to be to the United States or the children will return there for university, American International School has the deepest pipeline. If the family is on a regional transfer (the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, or another GCC country), Multinational School and King Faisal both work well. If the family has Saudi roots or is committed to a longer Riyadh stay, King Faisal has the strongest combination of academic rigour and Saudi cultural fluency.
Subject specialisation needs honest assessment of cohort size. A school with 25 Diploma candidates will run a fuller Higher Level menu than a school with 12. A child firmly oriented toward HL Maths, HL Physics and HL Chemistry should ask, at the visit, whether that exact combination has run in the past two years. Several Riyadh schools are unable to offer some HL options every year because the candidate count is too small.
Housing district matters because the Riyadh school run is genuinely time-consuming, and a child at a school 25 minutes from home in light traffic may face a 45 minute morning commute in the cooler months. Most families with strong school preferences shape their compound or villa choice around the school decision, not the other way around. For families balancing several considerations, the school finder quiz can structure the choice and the wider moving to Riyadh with kids guide handles the relocation context.
