Secondary provision in KL
The Klang Valley counts around 50 international schools delivering a full secondary phase from Year 7 to Year 13, with another ten offering only lower secondary or a shortened upper-school programme. The curriculum split tilts British: around 30 schools follow the Cambridge or Pearson Edexcel pathway through IGCSE and A Level, while 14 deliver the IB Middle Years and Diploma programmes. The remainder runs an American high school model with AP, or a hybrid Cambridge plus AP pathway popular at Sri KDU, Cempaka and Nexus.
Senior school capacity has expanded alongside primary capacity over the last seven years. Marlborough College Malaysia in Iskandar, just north of Singapore, has absorbed a chunk of regional boarding demand, while EtonHouse, Tenby Setia EcoHill and the second Sri KDU campus in Klang have added day capacity. The IB Diploma cohort in KL has roughly doubled since 2018 as universities outside the UK have grown share of leaver destinations. For a curriculum-by-curriculum view see our British curriculum hub and IB hub.
Sixth-form cohorts at KL schools are smaller than at international schools in Singapore or Hong Kong, with most A Level and IB Diploma groups running 60 to 140 students per year. Smaller cohorts mean tighter subject choice but stronger student-teacher relationships and more individual UCAS or US-application support.
Fees and the secondary tiers
Secondary fees in KL split into three rough tiers. The value tier, RM 45,000 to RM 62,000 per year, captures schools such as ELC International Sek 17, Cempaka International (Cheras) and the smaller Cambridge-curriculum campuses outside Mont Kiara. The mid tier, RM 62,000 to RM 90,000, covers Sri KDU International, Garden International, Tenby Setia EcoHill, and the Mont Kiara IB schools at lower secondary level. The premium tier, RM 90,000 to RM 130,000, is Alice Smith Senior, Mont'Kiara International Diploma years, ISKL and Marlborough College Malaysia day fees.
Sixth form fees push 10 to 20 percent above Year 11. Exam levies at the end of IGCSE, A Level or the Diploma typically add RM 3,000 to RM 7,000 in cash. Transport at RM 7,000 to RM 14,000 a year is the main additional running cost. For the full mathematics see our KL fees guide. The fees comparison tool shows tuition by year group across cities.
Choosing between A Level and the IB Diploma?

Sixth form pathways
Sixth form choice in KL is the single biggest decision a senior-school family makes. Three pathways dominate. A Level, offered at around 25 schools, suits students with a clear subject specialism and a UK, Australian or Hong Kong university target. The IB Diploma, offered at about 14 schools, suits all-rounders and students applying to a mix of US, European and Asian universities. The American High School Diploma with AP, offered at around six schools, suits students committed to the US application cycle and the holistic admissions model.
Outcomes are strong across all three at the better-resourced KL schools. The most recent published A Level grade distributions at Alice Smith and Garden International show roughly 60 percent of grades at A* or A. IB Diploma averages at Mont'Kiara and ISKL run between 35 and 38 points. AP enrolment at ISKL averages four to five courses per student in grades 11 and 12.
Illustrative example schools
The four schools below illustrate the upper end of the KL secondary market. They are not ranked.
Alice Smith School Senior at Equine Park is the oldest British senior school in Malaysia, with a traditional Year 7 to Year 13 British structure and strong A Level outcomes.
Garden International School Secondary in Mont Kiara delivers IGCSE and A Level on the city's largest single international campus, with strong oversubscription at Year 7 and Year 12.
Mont'Kiara International School Secondary runs the IB MYP and Diploma alongside an American-influenced approach, with a strong record of US, Canadian and UK university placement.
Marlborough College Malaysia in Iskandar combines day and boarding provision on a 90 acre campus, delivering IGCSE and the IB Diploma. The KL feeder is significant despite the two-hour drive south.
Where senior families live
Senior-school families in KL are less constrained by school proximity than primary or early-years families because school buses cover long routes and many sixth-formers travel independently. The strongest senior-family clusters sit in Mont Kiara, Sri Hartamas and Desa Park City for proximity to Mont'Kiara International, Garden International and the IB schools. Bangsar, Damansara Heights and Bukit Tunku for Alice Smith and the older expatriate corridor. Ampang and Bukit Pantai for ISKL families. Kota Damansara, TTDI and Bandar Utama for Sri KDU and the Cambridge belt. A growing number of families with children at Marlborough College Malaysia choose to base in Iskandar or even Singapore, with the senior boarding option in play.
Admissions calendar
Year 7 entry is the busiest single intake point. Applications open from September a year ahead of entry at the most competitive schools, with assessment days in January or February and offers in March. Year 12 entry into A Level or the IB Diploma typically requires earlier planning, often before the GCSE or IGCSE results window, because subject choices have to be confirmed at offer stage. Year 11 in-year transfers are accepted at most KL schools but are tighter than Year 10 entry because IGCSE coursework is partway through.
Frequently asked questions
How many international secondary schools are in Kuala Lumpur?
The Klang Valley has around 50 international schools running a full secondary phase to age 18, with another 10 offering only lower secondary. Around 30 deliver A Level or BTEC alongside IGCSE, and approximately 14 run the full IB Diploma. The rest combine Cambridge IGCSE with an American high school diploma or a hybrid pathway.
Which sixth form qualifications can my child take in KL?
The dominant sixth form qualifications are A Level (offered at around 25 schools), the IB Diploma (about 14 schools) and the American High School Diploma with AP courses (around 6 schools). A handful of schools also offer BTEC and Cambridge Pre-U. University destinations vary by curriculum, with UK and Australia favouring A Level, US favouring AP and Diploma, and Canada and Europe favouring the Diploma.
How much does secondary school cost in KL?
Annual secondary fees in Kuala Lumpur run from RM 45,000 at value-tier campuses to RM 130,000 at the premium IB and A Level schools in Mont Kiara, Ampang and Iskandar. Sixth form years tend to add 10 to 20 percent above Year 11 fees. Exam fees, books and capital levies push total cost roughly 25 percent above headline tuition.
Can my child join in Year 11 for IGCSE?
Most KL schools will accept Year 11 entry conditional on a place being available and a strong prior academic record. The challenge is curriculum match: a child arriving from a non-Cambridge system may need to drop a subject or take an extra term. Year 12 entry into A Level or the IB Diploma is harder; many schools require Year 11 to be completed at the same school.
When should I apply for secondary school in KL?
For Year 7 entry, apply nine to twelve months ahead of the August or September start at the most competitive schools, four to six months ahead at mid-tier campuses. Year 12 and Diploma entry requires longer planning, often a full year, because subject choices have to be confirmed at offer stage.
