The British schools in Riyadh
Riyadh operates around 12 schools delivering the British National Curriculum, taking pupils through Early Years Foundation Stage, IGCSE at age 16 and A Levels at 18. That is a smaller cluster than Dubai or Doha, but it has expanded sharply since 2022 as Vision 2030 has accelerated expat hiring under the Regional Headquarters programme.
The market falls into three groups. Two or three legacy schools form the established core, anchored by the British International School Riyadh, founded in 1979 to serve the UK diplomatic and business community. A middle band of compound and community schools delivers the same curriculum at lower fees, often with a strong Saudi national intake in addition to expat families. The newest layer is the premium independent imports, led by Sherborne Qatar Riyadh and Misk Schools, opening with significant capital backing and dedicated UK-style facilities.
ETEC, the Education and Training Evaluation Commission, inspects all private schools in Saudi Arabia. British schools also report to UK accreditation bodies, most often the British Schools Overseas framework, which signals UK university recognition. Between them, BSO and ETEC give parents a reliable read on quality, though the inspection cycle is longer than Dubai's KHDA annual cadence.
Fee tiers and what they buy
The British market in Riyadh has a wider fee spread than IB or French provision. The value tier, around SAR 45,000 to SAR 60,000 in secondary tuition, covers community British sections inside larger Saudi schools and the older compound schools. The mid tier, SAR 60,000 to SAR 80,000, captures most expat families and the established standalone schools. The premium tier, SAR 80,000 to SAR 105,000, is the recent independent imports with smaller cohorts, dedicated facilities and full A Level departments.
What the fee difference buys is the same triad seen across the Gulf. Smaller classes at the top end, often under 20, against 25 to 28 in the value tier. Lower faculty turnover, since premium schools fund teacher housing. Broader A Level offer at sixth form, often 25 plus subjects against 15 to 18 at the value end. Illustrative example schools
The four schools below illustrate the British curriculum landscape in Riyadh. They are not ranked. Each follows the English National Curriculum and reports outcomes that benchmark well against UK independent schools.
British International School Riyadh (BISR) in the Diplomatic Quarter is the city's legacy British school, founded in 1979. Strong sixth form, BSO accredited, large UK diplomatic and corporate intake. The single largest UK-curriculum school in the Kingdom.
Sherborne Qatar Riyadh, opening in phases through 2026, is the first true UK independent import in Riyadh. Modelled on Sherborne's UK and Qatar campuses, smaller cohorts and a defined British prep-to-senior pathway.
King's Academy Riyadh in the Diplomatic Quarter pairs the British curriculum at primary with an IB Diploma pathway at sixth form. Useful for families wanting to switch tracks at 16 without changing school.
Najd National Schools International Section offers a more affordable British curriculum pathway with stronger Arabic integration. The cohort is largely Saudi, which suits some expat families looking for Arabic immersion and slower fees creep.
Where British families live
British families in Riyadh cluster in three zones. The Diplomatic Quarter, home to most embassies, is the natural choice for UK diplomatic and senior corporate hires. Housing is mostly large villas inside the gated DQ enclave, with BISR and King's Academy Riyadh on the doorstep. Compound life is quieter and more anglophone than the rest of the city.
The second cluster sits in Al Olaya, Al Wahah and Hittin, where private compound communities such as Arizona, Al Hamra and Eid offer western-style residential living with school buses running into the DQ each morning. The third zone is Al Sahafah and Al Yasmin north of King Fahd Road, where newer premium schools including Misk and Sherborne have set up, drawing housing demand toward newly built villa compounds. Commute time in Riyadh remains a real consideration; school traffic on King Fahd Road can turn a 12 kilometre drive into 50 minutes.
Admissions calendar
Most Riyadh British schools open the following August intake in October. Selective schools, including BISR and Sherborne Riyadh, close the main intake for Year 7 and Year 12 by the end of February and run entry assessments in January and February. Non-selective schools accept rolling applications, with most mid-year movement in January and April. Families relocating mid-year should apply at least three months before arrival to secure a place at the school of their choice.
For Tier 1 schools, apply at least nine months before your desired start. Compare two or three Riyadh schools head to head with our compare tool, and shortlist using our school finder quiz.
