How many IB schools in Riyadh
Riyadh currently lists five authorised IB World Schools with the International Baccalaureate Organization. That is a small cluster compared with Dubai's 32, but it has doubled since 2019 and is set to grow further as new premium campuses open. Two candidate schools are expected to complete authorisation by the start of the 2026 academic year and a further two are in the pipeline.
Three of the five existing schools run the full Diploma Programme at sixth form. The others offer the Primary Years Programme or Middle Years Programme alongside another curriculum, typically British or American. Families targeting an unbroken IB pathway from age 3 to 18 have a more limited menu than they would in Dubai or Doha. The Continuum schools, those that run PYP, MYP and DP together, are the most over-subscribed and tend to close waiting lists earliest.
Quality is overseen by ETEC, the Education and Training Evaluation Commission, which inspects all private schools in the Kingdom on a five-year cycle. ETEC ratings are public and matter for fee increases, since regulator approval is needed for any uplift above inflation.
Fees and the three tiers
IB tuition in Riyadh sits in three broad bands. The entry tier, around SAR 60,000 to SAR 75,000 for secondary, covers schools running IB alongside other curricula at relatively low fees. The mid tier, SAR 75,000 to SAR 90,000, captures the established names with smaller cohorts and dedicated IB faculty. The premium tier, SAR 90,000 to SAR 105,000, is the newer purpose-built campuses with full continuum and strong university destinations.
The published fee is not the all-in cost. ETEC permits annual increases tied to inspection outcomes, and most schools add a registration fee, capital levy, transport contribution and IB exam entry fees on top of tuition. Plan for 15 to 25 percent above the headline figure. Our Riyadh fees guide breaks down the loading mathematics in full.

Where IB families live
IB families in Riyadh tend to settle in two zones. The Diplomatic Quarter, known locally as the DQ, holds most embassies and is by far the most cosmopolitan neighbourhood in the city. King's Academy Riyadh sits inside it, and the area's compound housing makes early starts and short commutes straightforward. The DQ is also home to most multinational corporate families on senior packages.
The second cluster is the Al Yasmin and Al Sahafah corridor north of King Fahd Road, where SEK and several of the newer schools sit. Housing is mostly villa-style and family-oriented, and the schools draw catchment from the Saudi professional class as well as expat hires under the Vision 2030 regional headquarters scheme. Other established IB families live in Al Wahah, Hittin and Al Olaya, where compound options and shorter commutes to central Riyadh are available.
Admissions calendar
Applications for the August 2026 intake opened in most Riyadh IB schools between October and December 2025. Tier 1 schools close their main intake for Year 7 and Year 12 by the end of February. Late applicants are placed on a waiting list and offered places only as withdrawals come through, typically between May and July. For families relocating mid-year, applications are accepted on a rolling basis subject to availability, with most movement happening in November and February.
If you are committing to a specific Riyadh IB school, apply 9 to 12 months before your target start date, and use the compare tool to weigh up three options head to head. Families on Saudi Aramco or Ministry of Investment housing should also factor compound waiting times into their planning.
