London has the deepest British curriculum market in the world plus a strong IB and American line, at premium prices. Doha has a smaller but well run international market with much lower fees and a tax free package on the back end. The right answer depends on whether the assignment, the curriculum and the lifestyle balance pull you east or stay you west.

Schools landscape side by side

London has the world's deepest British curriculum bench. Day school flagships include St Paul's, Westminster, King's College School Wimbledon, Highgate, Latymer Upper, City of London, North London Collegiate and Wycombe Abbey (boarding nearby). International families also cluster around ACS International, Southbank International, the American School in London and TASIS. IB and American provision is available but the British line dominates.

Doha's market is smaller but mature. The schools dominating shortlists are Doha College, the American School of Doha, Doha British School, Park House English School, Qatar Academy and Compass International School. Capacity is usually available outside the top two or three names, and many British families find a place within a single term.

Fees and value for money

London private school day fees typically run GBP 24,000 to GBP 35,000 per year, with elite day schools and international schools (ACS Cobham, Southbank) reaching GBP 38,000 to GBP 45,000. The recent removal of the VAT exemption (effective January 2025) adds 20 percent on tuition and pushes London among the most expensive markets in the world. See our London fees guide for the all in load.

Doha is dramatically cheaper. Premium schools such as Doha College and American School of Doha publish secondary fees between QAR 85,000 and QAR 110,000 (roughly USD 23,000 to USD 30,000). Mid tier schools land QAR 55,000 to QAR 75,000 per year. With no personal income tax, the after tax disposable advantage of Doha over London is large. Use the cost calculator to model the five year all in number per child.

Not sure which city fits your family?

Take the 5 minute school finder quiz, then run the cost calculator for both cities. You get shortlisted schools plus a side by side relocation budget in under ten minutes.

Curriculum availability

Both cities offer GCSE and A Level, IB Diploma and AP. London's main edge is depth of British curriculum schools and university preparation that matches Oxbridge and Russell Group expectations. Doha's main edge is breadth across British, IB, American and Indian CBSE in a small footprint. For curriculum specific deep dives see the IB hub, British curriculum hub and American curriculum hub.

Both cities give children the option of staying inside one curriculum from age 3 to 18. If university applications target Oxbridge, Russell Group or top US schools, London's A Level depth and counselling infrastructure are unmatched. Doha's flagship schools (Doha College, ASD) place strongly to UK and US universities each year, with smaller cohorts but tight support.

Neighbourhoods families pick

In London, international school families typically settle in Hampstead, Wimbledon, Richmond, Wandsworth, Chiswick, St John's Wood and Notting Hill. A four bedroom family home in Wimbledon or Chiswick runs GBP 4,500 to GBP 8,500 per month. Excellent public transport and short commutes to top day schools.

In Doha, families settle in West Bay, The Pearl, Lusail, Al Waab and Education City. A four bedroom villa in West Bay or Al Waab runs QAR 14,000 to QAR 22,000 per month (USD 3,800 to USD 6,000), with private compound amenities and short commutes to Doha College and ASD.

Lifestyle and climate

London is famously grey for nine months a year, mild summers, world class culture, sport and university access on the doorstep. Doha is hot and dry, with summers above 45 degrees Celsius from June to September that confine family life indoors, and a long pleasant winter with outdoor sport, beach weekends and easy travel across the Gulf. Both cities are safe by global standards. Travel from London opens Europe and North America; from Doha you reach Asia, Africa and Europe within hours via Hamad International.

London family rhythm is shaped by parks, museums, sport and rail commutes. Doha family rhythm is shaped by malls, compounds, beach clubs and short flights to Oman, the UAE and Europe. Air quality is better in London for most of the year; safety is broadly equivalent in both.

Verdict: who picks which city

Choose London if the schools, university pathway and cultural depth matter most, and your role can absorb the recent VAT driven uplift in fees. It is the strongest choice for families targeting Oxbridge, Russell Group or Ivy League and willing to pay the premium.

Choose Doha if a tax free package, lower fees and a calmer family rhythm matter more, and you are happy to plan family life around the long hot summers. Most families we work with run both cities through the cost calculator and the after tax delta usually favours Doha by USD 80,000 to USD 200,000 per year for senior assignments.
