Zurich and Mumbai sit at opposite ends of nearly every metric expat families care about. Zurich is one of the most expensive cities in the world and one of the most ordered. Mumbai is the financial capital of South Asia, vibrant and chaotic, with elite domestic IB schools that comfortably hold their own internationally but only a handful of true expat-led international options.

Schools landscape side by side

Zurich's market is small but extremely deep. Zurich International School in Wadenswil and Adliswil is the anchor IB continuum school, with the Inter-Community School Zurich in Zumikon a strong second. SIS Swiss International School runs bilingual German English programmes from age 3 to 18, and the International School of Central Switzerland and Lycee Francais Marie Curie give parents further choice in Limmattal and the wider canton. Capacity is generally good, but the IB Diploma cohort at ZIS and ICS Zurich can be tight.

Mumbai's elite is dominated by domestic IB schools rather than international curricula. The schools families shortlist are Dhirubhai Ambani International School in Bandra Kurla Complex, the American School of Bombay in BKC, BD Somani in Cuffe Parade and the Oberoi International School in Goregaon. ASB is the most expat-heavy by demographics; DAIS, BD Somani and Oberoi mix Indian and expat families. Demand is intense for Grade 1 and Grade 11 places. Apply at least nine months ahead for the top three.

Fees and value for money

Zurich is one of the world's most expensive cities for international schooling. ZIS publishes 2026 secondary tuition of CHF 41,000 to 47,000 with an entrance fee of CHF 6,000 and an annual capital contribution of about CHF 3,000. ICS Zurich and SIS sit in a similar band. Lunch, transport, exam fees and ski week extras typically add CHF 4,000 to 6,000 per child per year. See our Zurich fees guide for the full all-in load.

Mumbai is dramatically cheaper in absolute terms but no less premium at the top. DAIS publishes 2026 senior fees of about INR 11.5L for IBDP, plus admission and term fees that take all-in to roughly INR 15L per year. ASB sits closer to USD 28,000 to 35,000 because it follows a US fee structure. Use the cost calculator to model a five year all-in number per child. The Zurich and Mumbai delta on the same five year basis often runs USD 130,000 to 180,000 per child.

Curriculum availability

Zurich is IB heavy with strong American and British secondary options. The Swiss Matura is also available at SIS for families planning to stay long term and access Swiss universities at local fees. Mumbai is IB and IGCSE heavy at the international tier, with CBSE and ICSE the dominant Indian alternatives. Indian IB and IGCSE schools have unusually strong outcomes for engineering and medicine pipelines.

Neighbourhoods families pick

In Zurich, international school families cluster on the Goldkuste east of the lake in Zumikon, Erlenbach, Kusnacht and Zollikon, where ICS Zurich sits, and in Wadenswil, Adliswil and Thalwil on the south west bank around ZIS. A four-bedroom house with garden runs CHF 6,000 to 9,500 per month, with apartments in Kreis 7 and 8 cheaper but tighter on space.

In Mumbai, expat families pick Bandra West, Bandra Kurla Complex, Khar West, Powai for Oberoi, and Cuffe Parade and Worli for BD Somani. A three-bedroom apartment in BKC or Worli with sea views runs INR 350,000 to 600,000 per month, with leafier Bandra and Khar slightly cheaper. Powai is the family value option near Oberoi.

Lifestyle and climate

Zurich is mild continental, with cold snowy winters and warm summers between 22 and 28 degrees Celsius. Lake swimming in summer and skiing in winter define the family rhythm. The city is consistently rated one of the world's safest and best places to raise children, with public transport that genuinely works. Mumbai is hot tropical for nine months, with intense monsoon rain from June to September. Family life is indoors during monsoon and pre-monsoon humidity, but winter from December to February is bright and walkable. Both cities have busy airports; Zurich has unmatched access to Europe by train, Mumbai dominates direct routes to the Gulf and to Asia.

Verdict: who picks which city

Choose Zurich if safety, infrastructure, university outcomes through the IB Diploma at ZIS or ICS, and a calm orderly family rhythm matter more than cost. It also suits families who prize outdoor weekends, lake access and easy onward European travel.

Choose Mumbai if the financial logic works (domestic salary plus housing allowance, or a Mumbai-based corporate role), and your child is a fit for the academically intense culture at DAIS, ASB or Oberoi. It suits families with strong domestic networks in India who want their children inside the local Tier 1 pipeline.

Most families we work with run both cities through the cost calculator before they commit. The five year all-in delta between similar schools and similar housing is usually USD 130,000 to 200,000 in Mumbai's favour, but household income usually drops in line.

Frequently asked questions

Is Zurich or Mumbai cheaper for international school families in 2026?

Mumbai is dramatically cheaper. Zurich costs roughly four times more on a like-for-like basis once rent and tuition are included. Even premium Mumbai schools such as DAIS and ASB undercut Zurich International School by 40 to 70 percent.

Which city has better international schools?

Zurich has tighter, calmer international schools led by ZIS and ICS Zurich. Mumbai's elite is dominated by very strong domestic IB schools such as DAIS, BD Somani and Oberoi, plus ASB for true international families. Best fit depends on whether you want a domestic IB pipeline or an expat-led one.

Is the family visa easier in Zurich or Mumbai?

Mumbai is easier for non-EU families. India's X1 dependent visa is tied to an employment visa and is well understood by HR teams. Switzerland has strict quota-based work permits for non-EU citizens and most family moves require a corporate sponsor.

How long does the school admissions process take in each city?

Zurich International School and ICS Zurich often return decisions within four to eight weeks. Mumbai's top tier (DAIS, BD Somani, ASB, Oberoi) can take 8 to 16 weeks and admissions to Grade 1 and Grade 11 are very competitive.

Where do most international school families live in each city?

Zurich families cluster on the Goldkuste (Zumikon, Erlenbach, Kusnacht) and in Wadenswil. Mumbai families pick Bandra West, BKC, Worli, Cuffe Parade and Powai depending on the school they target.
