How many IB schools in Abu Dhabi

Abu Dhabi is currently home to 14 authorised IB World Schools registered with the International Baccalaureate Organization. That puts the emirate firmly second behind Dubai's 32 IB schools, but well ahead of Sharjah and the northern emirates combined. Eight of these schools offer the full IB Diploma Programme at sixth form. The remainder run the PYP, the MYP, or both, transitioning their Year 11 and Year 12 cohorts onto an A Level, an AP or a Cambridge IGCSE-plus-Bachillerato pathway.

Roughly half of the Abu Dhabi IB authorisations sit at schools with American or international foundations, including ACS Abu Dhabi and the International School of Choueifat, while the other half sit at British-foundation schools that have opened a parallel IB Diploma stream alongside their main A Level pathway. The pure American foundation tradition in Abu Dhabi runs deeper than in Dubai, which is why several of the strongest IB results in the emirate come from schools that pair the IB with an American grading system in lower years.

The cluster is mature for the size of the city. Most established IB schools in Abu Dhabi have been running the Diploma for at least a decade. Newer authorisations from 2022 onwards include Cranleigh Abu Dhabi and a handful of Saadiyat Island arrivals positioning the IB Diploma alongside A Levels.

Fees and the ADEK rating

Abu Dhabi IB fees split sharply along premium, mid and value tiers. The premium tier of Cranleigh Abu Dhabi, Brighton College and Repton runs to about AED 92,000 a year by Year 12, with comparable AED 88,000 fees at the established premium American schools. The mid tier sits in the AED 50,000 to AED 70,000 a year range and includes most of the established IB World Schools across Khalifa City and Al Mushrif. The value tier including the International School of Choueifat sits at around AED 38,000 to AED 45,000 a year. Median Year 9 IB fees sit near AED 65,000 in 2026. The Abu Dhabi Department of Education and Knowledge (ADEK) operates the Irtiqaa inspection framework that publishes a Band (1 to 8) and Performance Level (Outstanding to Weak) rating for every private school. Most Abu Dhabi IB schools sit in the Very Good to Outstanding range; weaker IB performers are quietly closed within two cycles. ADEK ratings are public and updated annually, so check the current rating before signing any enrolment contract.

Where IB families live

Abu Dhabi IB families cluster around the school anchors rather than spreading across the emirate. Saadiyat Island hosts the cluster around Cranleigh, NYU Abu Dhabi and the cultural quarter, popular with Western corporate and diplomatic families. Al Mushrif and Al Bateen on Abu Dhabi island anchor the ACS Abu Dhabi catchment. Bloom Gardens and the wider Al Maqtaa corridor serve Brighton College and the surrounding British schools. Khalifa City on the mainland has grown rapidly as the value-to-mid catchment, with Choueifat and several mid-tier IB and British schools serving the suburban professional market. Yas Island is the newest cluster with West Yas Academy and the wider Aldar estate.

Admissions calendar

Applications for the September 2026 academic year opened in most Abu Dhabi IB schools between September and November 2025. Tier 1 schools close their main intake for Year 7 and Year 12 by late January 2026. Late applicants are placed on a waiting list and offered places only as withdrawals come through, typically March to July. Mid-year transfers are accepted on a rolling basis subject to availability, with the heaviest movement between November and February. ADEK regulates inter-school transfers and a Transfer Certificate from the previous school is mandatory; the process usually takes two to three weeks.
