German provision in Riyadh

The German-language education market in Riyadh is anchored by a single school. The Deutsche Internationale Schule Riad, known as DISR, is an officially supported German school abroad operating under the supervision of the Zentralstelle für das Auslandsschulwesen, the central authority for German schools overseas. It serves children from Kindergarten through to Grade 12, and its leavers sit either the Deutsches Internationales Abitur or the Deutsche Internationale Abiturprüfung, both fully recognised by the German Kultusministerkonferenz.

The cohort is small by Riyadh standards, around 250 to 300 pupils. The majority are German passport holders attached to embassies, Mercedes-Benz, Siemens, BMW, Daimler and the German Chamber of Commerce. The remainder is a mix of Saudi families with German-business ties, Austrian and Swiss children, and a small number of other expatriates choosing the German pathway. The school's small size is a defining feature: classes typically run between 12 and 20 pupils, which is small even for premium Riyadh schools.

ETEC inspects DISR as it does all private schools in the Kingdom, but the core regulatory anchor is the German federal framework. That dual oversight matters when comparing DISR with the Anglo-Saxon market.

Fees and ZfA support

DISR fees run from around SAR 30,000 in Kindergarten through to roughly SAR 60,000 in the Gymnasium years. By Riyadh standards this puts the school in the lower-mid tier, well below the premium British and American campuses but in line with mid-tier IB and bilingual provision. There is a one-off enrolment fee, an annual building contribution and small charges for materials and excursions.

German citizens are entitled to ZfA tuition support through the German consulate, particularly where the household income falls below set thresholds or where employers do not cover the full tuition. The school also operates sibling discounts. Our Riyadh fees guide places DISR in the wider fee landscape, which helps weighing it against alternatives such as IB or British curriculum schools.

What DISR actually offers

The school delivers the German Bundesland curriculum, oriented mainly toward Thuringia and North Rhine-Westphalia syllabi, with adjustments for an international cohort. The Grundschule runs Grades 1 to 4, the Sekundarstufe I from Grade 5 to 10 and the Sekundarstufe II from Grade 11 to 12, ending in the Abitur. Children who do not continue to the Abitur can sit the Realschulabschluss at Grade 10, a recognised German vocational pathway qualification.

German is the medium of instruction. English is introduced from Grade 1 and intensifies to near-native fluency by the Abitur, which makes DISR an unusually trilingual exit point given Arabic exposure during the years in Riyadh. The school maintains links to German universities through visiting recruiters and through the standardised Abitur grade, which has the same weighting as a domestic German Abitur. Recent leavers have placed at LMU Munich, TU Berlin, Heidelberg and ETH Zurich, as well as UK Russell Group and US universities accepting the Abitur as a benchmark qualification.

Where German families live

German families in Riyadh cluster in two zones. The first is the Diplomatic Quarter, home to the German Embassy and the German Ambassador's residence. Most diplomatic, BMW and Siemens senior families live inside the DQ in embassy or company-managed villas, with DISR a short school-bus ride away. The second cluster sits along the King Fahd Road and Al Olaya corridor, where mid-career corporate German hires tend to settle in apartment complexes with access to the metro and the German Chamber of Commerce. A small number of families live further north in Al Sahafah, mainly where company housing has been arranged there.

Admissions and alternatives

DISR opens applications for the August intake from December. Priority is given to German passport holders and to siblings of current pupils. Other applications are reviewed against capacity and German language readiness, particularly from Grade 3 onwards, where the entire curriculum is delivered in German with no immersion programme to ease entry. Mid-year transfers are accepted in Grades 1 to 9 if places exist; the Oberstufe is essentially closed for transfers due to Abitur course sequencing.

If DISR cannot offer a place, the main alternatives are the IB Diploma at SEK or King's Academy Riyadh, both of which provide university recognition broadly equivalent to the Abitur, or the German Sprachdiplom at one of the larger international schools, which keeps the German language pathway open without delivering the full Abitur. Our compare tool sets up a side-by-side view of DISR against IB and British alternatives.
